Call to take up horticulture

Farmers should shift to horticulture and take maximum advantage of various subsidy-based schemes sanctioned by the Central and state governments, said Collector T. Abraham.

Presiding over the Farmers Grievances Day meeting held here on Friday, the Collector said that a wide range of schemes were being implemented in the district.

Under the National Horticultural Mission programme, special subsidy was available for the farmers, he said.

The Collector appealed to the farmers to take advantage of the cashew development programme and bamboo cultivation scheme.

It has been planned to bring 200 hectares under cashew cultivation scheme at an outlay of Rs.39.42 lakh. Another Rs.1.08 lakh would be released for raising bamboo.

A subsidy-based sprinkler irrigation scheme would be implemented on 360 hectares.

On the National Agriculture Development Programme, he said that 80 hectares would be developed at an expenditure of Rs.50.91 lakh.

On additional irrigational infrastructure, the Collector said that the district administration had sent a proposal for constructing check dams in the district.

R. Pitchai, District Revenue Officer; S. Sivakumar, Joint Director of Agriculture (in-charge) and Ramamurthy, Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies were among those who participated.
