Members of various political parties, social and Tamil organisations were arrested here on Tuesday after they staged black flag demonstration and attempted to picket road condemning the visit of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to India.
Cadres of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Communist Party of India (CPI), Tamizhar Desiya Iyyakkam, Tamizhar Desiya Podhuvudamai Katchi and Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (PDK) under the umbrella of Sri Lankan Tamils Protection Movement staged a black flag demonstration here.
They were led by the MDMK urban district secretary A. Malarmannan. The CPI district secretary Indrajit, party State council member Selvaraj and PDK district president S.T. Rajendran were among those who took part in the demonstration. The demonstrators were arrested as a precautionary measure and taken to a marriage hall.
A section of members of the Puthiya Tamizhagam, Pattali Makkal Katchi and Naam Tamizhar Iyakkam were arrested after they attempted to picket road here. All those arrested were later released.
