A new bridge being constructed across the Ariyar river on Navalurkuttapattu road, which would cater to the needs of residents of Somarasampettai and neighbouring villages in Tiruchi district, will be completed by November.

The bridge will provide a vital link between Allithurai-Thogamalai road and Tiruchi-Dindigul National Highway.

In the absence of the bridge, a large number of students from Somarasampettai, Kavalkaranpatti, and neighbouring villages have to take a roundabout of seven km to reach their schools and colleges at Navalurkuttapattu.

They could now reach their schools by travelling just about 1.5 km via the bridge.

Similarly, lorries transporting sugarcane from fields in the villages have to take a circuitous route of about 45 km to reach the sugar mill at Pettavaithalai.

The construction of the bridge will bring down the distance to just nine km, officials said.

The bridge is being built at a cost of Rs. 2.15 crore and will be completed ahead of its scheduled completion date in February, said S.Ramasamy, project director, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA).
