From a 500 mm ‘Thundamani' lamp to a six feet Malabar-style lamp, the exhibition underway at the Poompuhar showroom at Singarathope showcases a wide range of brass lamps. Among the 25 varieties of lamps and religious paraphernalia made from brass, there are lamps that include images of deities such as Ganesha, Gajalakshmi and Panchalinga, apart from the generic swan and parrot motifs.
The five-feet high ‘Special Nagas' lamp with its swan motif and ‘Vinayagar Nagas' lamp; the three feet high ‘Double Thakazhi' lamp and the 48 cm high ‘Mangala Deepam'; the 18 inches high layered lamp and the 18 inches high hanging lamps with parrots; the one litre ‘Thundamani' lamp and the traditional ‘agal' lamps are some of the main highlights of the brass lamps collection on display.
Besides the rows of glimmering brass lamps, the exhibition also features a range of decorative items in brass along with an assortment of handcrafted collectibles that have been sourced from both within and outside Tamil Nadu.
Decorative brass wall plates, baskets and puja items sourced from Moradabad; ‘Panchaloha' statues, Thanjavur art plates and paintings, handloom saris, bedspreads, and Kashmiri shawls are some of the popular displays. Apart from these, gemstones, pearl necklaces, handicrafts made from alloy metals, incense sticks and a variety of gift articles are part of the showroom's regular offerings.
The exhibition, which is on until June 16, features handicrafts worth Rs.20 lakhs and is open everyday (except Sundays) between 10 am and 8 pm.
