Boy trapped in quicksand in Mukkombu dies

May 07, 2013 02:46 pm | Updated 02:46 pm IST - TIRUCHI:

Popular picnic spot Mukkombu near here was witness to another tragedy on Monday evening when a 15-year-old boy got trapped in quicksand and met a watery grave. In March, a student of a private city college had drowned in a similar situation.

The teenaged victim, R. Karthik, a resident of Malligaipuram in Tiruchi, had written the SSLC examination and was awaiting results.

He went to the picnic spot along with his family members and some of them ventured into a pool of water. But the boy went deeper unaware of the presence of quicksand and got trapped, police sources said.

Acting on information, fire fighters from Tiruchi Fire Station immediately rushed to the spot. But their efforts to save the boy turned futile.

The boy’s body was sent to Mahatma Gandhi Government Hospital for post-mortem. Jeeyapuram police have registered a case.

Incidentally, the boy drowned at the same spot where the college student had died. A week ago, four persons, including a mother-daughter duo, drowned in a pool of water in the Cauvery at Perugamani, a few kilometres from Mukkombu.
