A huge boulder from the famous Rockfort rolled down and fell over a house on the West Street during the heavy downpour in the city on Saturday evening.
A wall of the house was damaged. No one was injured as the boulder fell on the kitchen yard of the house.
Officials from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Board, M. Pughazhendran, Joint Commissioner, C. Jayapriya, Executive Officer, and R. anoharan, MLA, inspected the scene.
Sources said there were several encroachments around the base of the temple and a survey would be taken up for identifying the unauthorised structures, many of which were constructed decades ago.
Scattered rainfall over the past couple of days has raised the hopes of a good monsoon among farmers in some rain-fed areas of the district which have faced drought conditions over the past seven months. Ponnaniyar Dam near Manapparai received the maximum rainfall of 60 mm during Saturday’s heavy downpour in some parts of the district.

The rainfall received in other parts of the district in the past 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Sunday is as follows (in mm): Tiruchi Junction 54; Golden Rock 37.60; Tiruchi Town 36.80; Navalur Kottapattu 33; Manapparai 31.60; Tiruchi Airport 31; Marungapuri 25.20; Pullampadi 15.60; Kovilpatti 15.40; Kallakudi 15.10; Lalgudi 12.60, and Upper Anicut 8.50.
The district received an average rainfall of 17.45 mm.
