A 28-year-old man who allegedly attempted to steal cash from an unmanned automated teller machine in the city after disconnecting the wire of surveillance camera was arrested by the Fort Crime Police on Monday.
The accused A. Shahjahan had made a vain attempt to tamper with the ATM machine of Canara Bank situated along the Madurai road in the late hours on Saturday.
He, however, took away the camera installed atop the ATM loaded with cash, after withdrawing money with his card, police sources said.
On finding the ATM damaged on Sunday, the bank’s chief manager P. Rajendran preferred a complaint with the Fort Crime Police.
Fingerprint experts inspected the crime scene.

Based on the visuals captured in the camera and the details of the card last operated, the police pinned down the accused and arrested him, sources said adding that the accused had made a similar attempt at an ATM of another bank at the same location in September.
He was remanded in judicial custody.
