With distinct commercial advantages in the long run, Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion (CFBC) boilers will be increasingly used for power generation as well as for industrial applications in future, Sukal Lomash, General Manager (in-charge), Corporate Engineering and Product Development, BHEL, New Delhi, said on Wednesday.
The advantage accruing from clean-coal platform will be by way of fuel flexibility to burn coal, lignite, coal washery rejects, biomass and waste materials at a low combustion temperature, Mr. Sukal said, inaugurating an international workshop on “Design and operating experience of coal/lignite/petcoke in large utility CFBC boilers” at BHEL, Tiruchi. These boilers have a market potential of around 8,000 MW per annum, he said. Referring to BHEL's leadership position in power plant business for the past five decades, he said that the company was all set to further expand the capacity to 20,000 MW per annum by March 2012.
M.Karunakara Reddy, General Manager (in-charge), (Engineering – Boilers), BHEL, Tiruchi, in his key-note address said that BHEL's pioneering research in Bubbling Fluidised Bed (BFB) and CFBC boilers would help in harnessing an estimated reserve of 39,445 million tons of lignite deposits in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan. After successfully commissioning various 120 MW CFBC projects, BHEL was now executing two 250 MW CFBC units at Neyveli and Barsingsar, and has a further plan to design and develop large size CFBC units, he said.
B.V.S.S.S Prasad, Professor, IIT-Madras, with which BHEL has a research tie-up, said that the two entities through the joint research in the areas of design development and standardization of CFBC boilers were able to solve many issues on the RRVUNL'S (Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited ) Giral and NLC's Barsingsar CFBC projects being executed by BHEL.
M Sundarajan, General Manager, Fluidised Bed Combustion & Heat Recovery steam Generators group (FBC & HRSG), and S.Kiraha Prakash, Engineer, also elaborated on the advantages of the technology.
