The life of Tamil poet Bharathidasan is worth emulating, said V.M. Muthukumar, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathidasan University.

Unveiling the statue of Bharathidasan on the university’s city campus at Khajamalai on the occasion of his 125{+t}{+h}birthday celebrations on Wednesday, he said the poet led an illustrious life. His contribution to Tamil literature played a role of catalyst in bringing social revolution and transformation. His awakening poems kindled patriotic thinking against the British rulers. He championed the cause of deprived and oppressed people. He was a social reformer.

Mr. Muthukumar said Bharathidasan’s policies and programmes would never be unwritten from the history. He was among a few persons, whose life could be emulated by the people, particularly youths.

Stressing the importance of developing book-reading habit, he said Bharathidasan could become an accomplished poet and writer because of his deep involvement in reading books. Books had produced a number of social transformers and thinkers in the country. The students, who spent time in reading books, could become good scholars and contribute to society.

R. Karpaga Kumaravel, Director, Khajamalai campus, R. Mangaleswaran, Syndicate Member, S. Srinivasa Ragavan, Head, Library and Information Science, spoke.

Earlier, Mr. Muthukumar inaugurated an updated library on the Khajamalai campus.
