Even as the fisherfolk took to streets on a hunger strike on Thursday, protesting alleged non-allocation of tsunami houses in Velankanni, highly placed sources in the administration stated that the process was already in place with a five-member committee having shortlisted beneficiaries to avail the houses.
According to the administration, a five-member committee was constituted few months ago to shortlist beneficiaries. Accordingly, under Phase I, a list of 46 beneficiaries were identified and the list pasted at the offices of the village administrative officer, executive officer, revenue inspector, including the offices of the Tahsildar and town panchayat seeking objections if any to the eligibility criteria of the shortlisted beneficiaries. It was brought to the administration's notice that 10 beneficiaries owned lodges in Velankanni and hence their names were removed.
According to the administration, a community diktat is reported to have been issued at the level of Panchayatars (fishing community heads) to the remaining 36 beneficiaries to reject the houses until houses were given to all the beneficiaries.
The administration has already issued notices to the 36 to take up the houses within the stipulated time or state in writing that they don't need the houses. Further, a second list would be drawn up, sources said..
