Banking operations in Tiruchi and its neighbouring districts came to a standstill as officers and employees of the public sector banks and some private banks commenced their two-day strike on Monday in support of their demands including immediate revision in wages.
The striking officers and employees vehemently opposed the proposed reforms in banks besides opposing the merger of public sector banks.
Employees of various public sector banks participated in a demonstration held in front of the State Bank of India Town branch premises here in support of their demands.
The demonstration was led by the Bank Employees Federation of India district secretary, K. Gurumoorthy.
The private banks that joined the strike were Lakshmi Vilas Bank, the Karur Vysya Bank, Karnataka Bank, Federal Bank, South Indian Bank, and Catholic Syrian Bank.
An office-bearer of the All India Bank Employees’ Association here said there were no operations in the banks because of the strike.
The strike call has been given by the United Forum of Bank Unions consisting of nine unions.
