About 840 bunches of different varieties of banana were auctioned at the Integrated Market Complex for Banana at Thiruchendurai in the district on Tuesday. Twenty-nine farmers and 15 traders participated in the auction. Top quality ‘poovan’ and ‘pachaladan’ banana varieties fetched a maximum of Rs.200 a bunch, ‘rasthali’ Rs.345 a bunch, ‘nendran’ Rs. 280 a bunch and ‘karpooravali’ Rs. 150 a bunch.

The fruits, totally sold for Rs. 73,855, were brought by farmers from Kiliyanallur, Sirugambur, Chennakarai, Sengudi, Kuzhmani, Lalgudi, Andhanallur, Pettavaithalai, Perugamani and Kulithalai. The next auction at the market would be held on April 7, Collector K.S.Palanisamy said in a press release.— Special Correspondent
