Ban on use of plastic goods in Srirangam

January 02, 2015 10:13 am | Updated 10:13 am IST - TIRUCHI:

The City Corporation will strictly enforce the ban on products made of plastics below 40 microns in thickness in Srirangam, especially during the on-going Vaikunta Ekadasi festival, Corporation Commissioner V.P.Thandapani has said.

Plastic collection centres have been set up at all the five entrances to the town. Plastic bags will be collected and cloth bags will be provided to all those passing through the area. Pamphlets will be given to those travelling in vehicles asking them not to use plastic bags and others will be advised though a public address system to hand over plastic items at the designated centres, he said in a press release.

Besides, 27 centres have been set up to collect plastic products with the help of Exnora and other voluntary organisations. Persons who hand over plastic items will receive a lucky draw coupon. Gifts including gold coins for three persons, 10 silver coins, and seven LED bulbs would be given after a draw of lots. Hundred consolation prize winners will be given free saplings. Donors have been requested to avoid giving away plastic water packets and annadanam food in plastic covers. Officials would monitor the area and inspect it to check the use of plastics.
