Teachers especially those in primary schools should understand the shortcomings of students in the learning process at an early stage and tutor them accordingly to help overcome learning difficulty, P.Perumalsamy, Director of School Education said here on Saturday.

Primary school teachers play a role in child development that is vital next only to the parents. They should assess each child to ascertain the learning problems of children and help in addressing them, Mr.Perumalsamy said at an awareness programme organised for primary school teachers as part of the 35th annual state conference of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics in the city.

Teaching community should take part in workshops regularly aimed at child development and understanding their problems and implement what they learnt in the classrooms. Teachers should go beyond textbooks and broaden their knowledge by reading a lot of books and the fruits of research in the education should percolate down to the classroom level this would usher change in the long run, he said.

Speaking on early identification of learning problems in primary school children, Clinical Neuropsychologist from Chennai Dr.Viruthagirinathan said understanding the child's problem was the first step towards its management. He explained the causes of learning difficulty, its different types and the ways to solve the problem.

Early identification of learning difficulty among children would go a long way in solving this problem. Teachers must first have the awareness about learning difficulty among children, he added.
