An audio compact disc brought out by the district administration to highlight the importance of voters exercising their franchise was released in the city on Thursday.

The CD with messages on the importance of performing the democratic duty, voting as per conscience without taking money will be used to sensitise people in the run-up to the elections.

The awareness CDs will be played in buses, Corporation vehicles and other public places.

Releasing the CD, Collector Jayashree Muralidharan said awareness seemed to be low among youth on the need for exercising their franchise. Enrolment of voters in the age group of 18 to 29 has improved thanks to the awareness initiatives taken up in colleges.

Currently, 4.47 lakh of the 5.66 lakh persons in the age group of 18 to 29 in the district have been enrolled in the voters list.

Corporation Commissioner V.P.Thandapani received the first copy of the CD. Students of the Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts presented a cultural programme on the occasion.
