Tiruchi district has delivered a more than expected overall performance in the plus two public examinations this time notching up 93.78 per cent, the best so far, bettering last year’s record by an impressive 6.1 per cent.
The district’s performance is well ahead of the State average of 88.1 per cent. Out of 29,776 students from 201 schools who appeared for the exam, 27,923 have passed. Last year, the overall performance of 87.67 per cent reflected a slight slide from the previous year’s 88.45 per cent.
“This time, we expected the overall pass percentage to be in the range of 91 or 92 at the most . The performance has indeed exceeded our expectations. A total of 48 schools, including eight government higher secondary schools, have achieved cent per cent results,” a beaming Chief Educational Officer K. Selvakumar told media persons on Thursday.
One mark makes all the difference
A difference of only one mark separates the district toppers from the second rank holders, and the latter from the third rankers. With a total of 1,179, there are three district toppers: N.S. Sushmithaa of SRV Matriculation Higher Secondary School, G. Praveena of Cauvery Matriculation HSS, and R. Subashini of Savithri Vidyasala Hindu Girls’ HSS. Each has scored centum in two subjects: Sushmithaa in biology and maths, Praveena in commerce and accountancy, and Subashini in chemistry and maths.
Two students: P. Serene Balaji of SRV Matriculation HSS and K. Vigneshram of Bishop Heber HSS, Teppakulam - share the second spot with an overall score of 1,178. Both have scored centum in chemistry and maths. The third rank holder, R. Sadhvika, with a score of 1,177 is also from SRV Matriculation HSS, and has secured centum in biology and maths.
Four students have scored higher totals, but they are not in the reckoning for the district-level distinction since they had not chosen Tamil as the first language.
S.V. Krishnapriya of Savithri Vidyasala Hindu Girls’ HSS and V. Kausalya of Girls’ HSS, Srirangam, have scored 1,188 and 1,185 respectively with Sanskrit as the first language. In this category, there are four third rank holders with a total of 1,183 marks each: T. Kirthana Kumari of St. Joseph’s Anglo Indian Girls’ HSS, K.N.M. Suvedha of SRV Matriculation HSS, A. Larsan Aro Brian of Campion Anglo Indian HSS, and S. Abarajitha of Savithri Vidyasala Hindu Girls’ HSS.
The first three students had chosen French as the first language, and the last one had chosen Sanskrit. Of these 15 performers, 12 are girls. Four of the performers belong to SRV Matric HSS where a total of 1,075 students appeared for the exam. The school secured cent per cent pass.
Barring Praveena who intends to become a chartered accountant, the rest of them have set their sights on pursuing either medicine or engineering.
Most of these students attributed methodical preparation and encouragement from parents and teachers to their success. They were felicitated by Collector Jayashree Muralidharan and senior education department officials. A maximum of 70 students have scored centum in accountancy. The number of centum in mathematics is 53, followed by chemistry (46), commerce (41), computer science (33), economics (33), and biology (9).
