Eight new marks were set at the recently concluded district athletics meet that saw the participation of good number of youngsters from the rural parts of Tiruchi. The two-day event organised by the Tiruchi District Athletics Association (TDAA) was held for boys and girls, in the under-20, 18, 16, and 14 age categories, who gave their best in quest for glory. Over 2,500 athletes took part in the meet held at Anna Stadium here.

“The overwhelming response for the meet is enough indication of the popularity athletics enjoys among youngsters of Tiruchi. Youth from rural parts of the district also participated in large numbers, which is a very good sign,” observed N.Annavi, former international high jumper and TDAA secretary.

Based on their performance, athletes will be chosen to represent Tiruchi in championships to be conducted at different levels.

Mr.Annavi exuded hope that athletes from Tiruchi would bring laurels to the district.

Tiruchi Sports Hostel with a tally of 24 medals (nine gold, six silver, and nine bronze) and Amala Girls Higher Secondary School, Musiri, with 25 medals (nine gold, 10 silver and six bronze) bagged the overall championship in the men’s and women’s sections respectively. K.Selvakumar, Chief Educational Officer, gave away the prizes in the presence of R.Annadurai, former international athlete, P.Kalaiselvan, District Sports Officer, and M.Bhaskara Chezhian, vice-president, TDAA.
