Mr. Jerome and two other party members – R.C. Babu and Rajesh surrendered before Judicial Magistrate –I court which had issued warrants against them.
Congress urban district president Jerome Arokiaraj and two other party members surrendered before a judicial magistrate court here on Monday as per a direction in the anticipatory bail order granted by District Sessions Court in connection with a case registered against them in September 2011.
While granting anticipatory bail to four Congress functionaries on Friday, the Sessions Court ordered them to surrender before Judicial Magistrate – I with two sureties and sign before court in the morning and evening hours everyday for a period of 30 days. Accordingly, Mr. Jerome and two other party members – R.C. Babu and Rajesh surrendered before Judicial Magistrate –I court which had issued warrants against them a few days ago after the Fort Police filed charge sheet naming Mr. Jerome and nine others as absconding in the case. Mr. Jerome and others sought anticipatory bail from the Sessions Court.
The incident took place in September 2011 when a group of arrested Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Puthiya Tamizhagam, Naam Tamizhar Katchi and Periyar Pasarai members hurled footwear while being taken in police vehicles towards fasting Congress cadre at Chinthamani here. The Congress cadre were on fast seeking the execution of court sentences awarded to the accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The incident triggered tension as Congress cadre retaliated by hurling stones in which the windscreen of the police vehicle was damaged. Cases were registered against both under various sections.
