Senior gynaecologist, obstetrician and founder president of Tiruchi Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society, A.V.K. Nirmala, was conferred the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award' by the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R.Medical University for her contribution to ‘health education and service'.
The 72-year-old doctor was presented the award by M.Rajendran, former governor of Orissa, on the occasion of International Nurses Day observed in Chennai on Saturday. Dr.Nirmala has held posts in various medical colleges including Thanjavur Medical College where she served as head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The past president of the Thanjavur Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society now acts as honorary teacher for Diploma of National Board (O and G) in C.S.I. Mission Hospital. Besides being involved in academic research, Dr.Nirmala has conducted school camps, family planning camps while in government service, and antenatal camps for rural women under the aegis of TRIOGS.
Interestingly, Dr.Nirmala's husband, Dr.Mohamed Farook was conferred the lifetime achievement award earlier in March this year, earning the doctor duo the distinction of claiming the honour in the same calendar year.
On Sunday, the Tiruchi Chapter of the Indian Medical Association felicitated Dr.Nirmala along with Mohamed Farook, G.Ganapathy, S.Ponniah, V.Ramamoorthy, M.Chenniappan, and M.S.Ashraf, senior practitioners and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, 2012.
