Applications invited for environmental awards

Applications have been invited for the Environmental Awards 2011 given away by the State government.

The awards will be given under the categories of Environmental Awareness and Education and Environmental Protection and Management.

The broad eligibility criteria for the two awards state that the applicants must be institutions or organisations, educationists and individuals who are involved in the promotion of awareness, protection and management of the environment.

Activities carried over the past three years alone are eligible for the awards. Individual applicants, besides being above 18 years of age, must also not be employed in any institutions.

All applicants must be from Tamil Nadu and they may apply for only one category and must not be earlier recipients of the award.

Individuals or institutions applying for the Environmental Protection and Management award, must furnish detailed reports of any fieldwork undertaken .

The report must carry project-related pamphlets, project reports, newspaper clippings and an estimation of the fieldwork's usefulness. Officials from the departments related to the issue or members of the selection committee will inspect the fieldwork reports submitted under this category.

An award would also be given for the best research paper published on an issue of environmental management. Instituted to encourage research activities pertaining to environmental concerns, the award will be given to papers individually or jointly published in 2011. The winner will be honoured with a cash prize and a citation.

Under this category, applications from researchers and research organisations involved in environmental management are sought.

Only papers that have been published in reputed scientific journals (in English or Tamil) will be considered for the award and applicants must provide proof of its publication.

The other rules for application are: If the paper is in English, a Tamil translation must accompany it; if it is in the form of a book, the entire book must be submitted; in the case of the paper being jointly published, the primary individual alone is eligible to apply and those who have already received the award are not eligible.

The application forms can be downloaded from the website: www.environment.in.nic.in or obtained from the office of the Director, Department of Environment, Chennai.

The forms will be available up to February 7 and the last date for submission of applications is February 27.
