A new apolitical democratic body to take up demands of minority community and find solutions to their problems has been launched.
Christened Tamil Nadu Minority People’s Welfare Organisation, the new body would be managed by a 19-member committee that includes former MLA S. Noor Mohamed, convenor of the newly created body, and Leema Rose, ex- MLA of the CPI (M), who is one of the joint convenors.
The organisation took shape at the end of the State-level minority people welfare conference held here on Sunday. Sehba Farooqui, national secretary, All India Democratic Women’s Association, said communalism should be seen as an attack on the very secular fabric of the country and not against Muslims alone. Muslims should join hands with secular forces in the fight against fascist forces and polarisation, she said. Six resolutions were adopted at the conference. This includes 10 per cent reservation for Muslims and five per cent for other minority community as per the recommendations of the Ranganath Misra Commission. The conference urged the Centre to provide Scheduled Caste reservation for Dalit Christians and other benefits to them.
