K. Jennitha Anto, a differently abled international chess player from Tiruchi, has bagged a bronze medal (disabled category) at the recently-concluded Commonwealth Chess Championship in Glasgow.
Ms. Anto, a Woman International Master, competed in the open category in the championship, which saw participation of chess players from various Commonwealth countries.
After nine rounds, she finished with 4.5 points and was ranked third among the participants in the disabled section.
“The competition was pretty tough and it was a good experience,” she said. Ms. Anto, who was afflicted with polio at the age of three, had won medals in various international tournaments.
Last year, she bagged gold medal in the 13 IPCA (International Physically disabled Chess Association) world individual chess championship.
Ms. Anto will be participating in the 41 Chess Olympiad in Norway (August) and 14 IPCA world individual chess championship in Serbia (September).
“We are hoping to get financial assistance from the government to participate in the tournaments,” says G. Kanickai Irudayaraj, father-cum-coach of Ms. Jennitha Anto.
