Anti-nuclear activist R.S. Mugilan, who is facing a sedition charge booked by the Kudankulam police in Tirunelveli district, surrendered before a Judicial Magistrate Court here on Wednesday.

Mr. Mugilan, who is one of the coordinators of the struggle committee fighting against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, was remanded in judicial custody till December 29 by Judicial Magistrate II K. Muralitharakannan. He was later lodged in the Tiruchi Central Prison.

Mr. Mugilan said he had surrendered before the court to press the government to withdraw all the cases booked against him and the people.

The State government, he said, had booked a total of 380 cases against 2.27 lakh people between 2011 and 2013 after they took part in a series of protests against the Kudankulam plant.

On the direction of the Supreme Court, the government withdrew 248 cases and but kept the remaining 132 cases, in which he and others were implicated.

Mr. Mugilan said the Kudankulam police had booked a slew of cases against him and other protestors under various sections of the IPC, and under the Explosives Substances Act between 2011 and 2013.
