‘Encourage children to excel in fine arts’

An assorted mix of landscapes, portraits, still-life, abstracts and emotions art works are on display and for sale at the annual art exhibition of paintings and drawings, organised by the United Painters Association inaugurated here on Friday.

United Painters Association, which was once a thriving association was started in 1971, functioned for more than 20 years, organised various art exhibitions, competitions and later became defunct.

The association was revived in June 2013 and has 65 members from Tiruchi, Karur and Pudukkottai districts. The association has now come up with its first edition of art exhibition after its revival.features a total of 250 artworks of 32 artists from Tiruchi, Karur and Pudukkottai.

The exhibition showcases artworks using various techniques: water colours, acrylics, pastels, oil colours, collage, pencil sketches, charcoal, fuji colour, tempera, ink, enamel and foil work. The artworks are priced between Rs. 600 and Rs. 25,000.

“I have been drawing since my school days. I used to observe the works of famous artists, and tweak them slightly to suit my interests. My father was a pillar of support and he encouraged my interest in the field of arts and helped me nurture it,” said T. Jeyaraj, well known illustrator, who inaugurated the exhibition. Known for illustrating in Tamil magazines and periodicals, Mr. Jeyaraj advised parents to encourage their children when they show their talentsin fine arts.

After the inaugural event, Mr. Jeyaraj gave a demonstration on the techniques of drawing to interested patrons and aspiring artists.

The three-day event is ongoing at Poomalai Shopping Complex, Bharathidasan Salai, Cantonment, open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and concludes on March 23.
