Anna Nagar link road opened on trial basis

It may take sometime for the traffic to stabilise

The Anna Nagar link road, connecting the Anna Nagar Main Road and the Lawsons Road near the MGR Statue in Cantonment in the city, has been thrown open to traffic on a trial basis.

After progressing in fits and starts over the past five years, the work has finally reached the finishing stage. Although the approaches are yet to be blacktopped, the link road was thrown open for traffic on Monday. Corporation sources said the road had been opened on a trial basis as it was a newly formed one and it would take sometime for the regular traffic to stabilise. Sinkholes may appear on such new road formations.

A bridge has been built across the Uyyakondan canal and currently work is under way on laying approach roads on both sides.

The road was initially sanctioned at an estimate of Rs. 4.38 crore, which included a grant of Rs.1.20 crore from Seed Capital Assistance Scheme of Department of Town and Country Planning.

The corporation had decided to strengthen the Anna Nagar Main Road. This and a few other works such as junction improvements at the MGR statue junction and also at the Anna Nagar Road have to be carried out. Besides, centre median has to be built and street lights installed. These works are to be carried out over the next one month.

Although it is a two-way road, currently vehicles from MGR Statue side cannot take a right turn to enter the road ahead of the traffic signal at the junction.

Sources indicated that the median near the junction would be demolished for a few metres and a traffic roundabout would be created to allow vehicles to enter the link road from the Cantonment side. Similarly, a traffic roundabout is to be created on the Anna Nagar Road.

The link road project encountered prolonged breaks over the past five years after the work began in 2009. A dithering contractor and a design change caused enormous delays in the project. The opening of the road would ease traffic congestion on the Pattabiraman Pillai Road and Thillainagar areas.
