An ancient idol of Sri Ayyanar was unearthed at a tank in Azhiyanilai near Aranthangi on Wednesday.

The beautifully carved metallic idol, weighing 17 kg, in a seated posture, testifies to the intricate workmanship of the past. The entire idol is seen mounted on a lotus. The idol holds a snake in the right arm. The right arm points towards the holy feet. A belt-like structure is seen tied from the hip to the left knee.

The statue testifies to the decoration with garland of precious stones, ‘thandai’ on the legs, ‘aaram’ or necklace on the neck.

The idol was sighted at Vathirankulam when a villager, Marimuthu, was fishing in the tank. He informed the authorities. Revenue officials rushed to the spot and ascertained its weight and measurements.
