Policemen and railway personnel have been posted at the unmanned level crossing at Anbu Nagar in the city to regulate the flow of traffic since Wednesday.
This follows the diversion of traffic of light vehicles and two wheelers via the Anbu Nagar unmanned level crossing following the closure of the railway level crossing on the Tiruchi – Madurai national highway at Crawford on April 18, to enable the commencement of construction work on the road over bridge.
Political parties, traders associations and other organisations of Edamalaipattipudur pleaded adequate safety measures at the unmanned level crossing. On the direction of the District Collector, Mahesan Kasirajan, a meeting of the officials of the revenue, transport, state transport corporation, highways and railways was held here on Wednesday.
Mohamed Badusha, District Supply Officer, presided over the meeting.
Following the requests of the locals, it was decided to allow only light vehicles via the Anbu Nagar unmanned level crossing and heavy vehicles shall be diverted via the bypass road.
As a safety measure, it was decided to post two police personnel – one each from the local police and railway police, round-the-clock to regulate flow of traffic .
The Railways on its part will post an employee both in the day and night to help the police.
Iron chain
The railway personnel on receipt of information on the arrival of trains will stop the traffic instantly with the help of iron chain. This arrangement will be continued till the over bridge construction work is completed.
They also pleaded for the conversion of this unmanned level crossing into a manned level crossing.
The locals also pleaded for the setting up of height gauge to check the entry of heavy vehicles through Anbu Nagar.
The locals also pleaded for steps to check overcrowding in share autos and collection of exorbitant fares. Mr.Badusha said that transport department staff will conduct surprise checks of the share autos to arrest the trend. When the people demanded temporary alternative road through private land or the defence land nearby, Mr.Badusha said that the same could be taken up for discussion with the Revenue Divisional Officer on Monday.
Meanwhile as per the earlier decision, the city buses were operated via the bypass road and they took a diversion at Panjapur to touch Edamalaipattipudur.
