The All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) has demanded the convening of a special assembly session to discuss problems faced by the working class in Tamil Nadu and agriculture-related issues.
The AICCTU has already embarked on a State-wide campaign pressing for the convening of the special session as well as explaining the objectives behind the nation-wide strike called by central trade union organisations on February 20 and 21 in order to make it a success.
Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, AICCTU state honorary president S. Jawahar said the campaigns, which had simultaneously started from Kanyakumari and Coimbatore on February 2, would culminate in Chennai on February 12 where a rally by the working class and a public meeting would be organised.
At a time when the working class and the agricultural community were facing a host of problems in the State due to economic policies and failure of the samba crop affecting their livelihood, it was essential to convene a special assembly session to discuss the problems faced by the working class and the farmers and initiate remedial measures, Mr. Jawahar said.
The AICCTU has sought the creation of a separate commissionerate in Tamil Nadu to protect migrant labourers and wanted the State government to exert pressure on the Centre to enact a law for the welfare of the migrant workers.
It urged the State government to declare power loom factories as industry as this would enable the workers to get salary and other benefits as per labour law.
It opposed privatisation of power sector and wanted the government to control price rise.
