The State Government has sanctioned ₹16.49 crore under the ‘kuruvai’ special package for Nagapattinam district for the farmers to take up profitable farm activities during the season, Agricultural Production Commissioner and Principal Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi said here on Tuesday.

During a day-long tour that took him to Sembanarkoil Union and Mayiladuthurai Union in the district, Mr. Bedi had a first-hand experience of the implementation of the package in those areas. He told the farmers that the thrust of the special package was on mechanised farming that would yield the desired results for the farmers.

Another important aspect the farmers must guard against was over exploitation of groundwater resources, Mr. Bedi counselled the ryots with whom he had discussions on the issues they were facing. Application of micro nutrients was an integral feature of the package, he added.

At Kodangudi village in Mayiladuthurai Union, he inspected the fields where mechanised transplanting was already carried out and where the crops were in good condition. Mr. Bedi visited the fields of a farmer P. Kalyanam at Arupathy village in Sembanarkoil Union. He instructed the officials to expedite the works on constructing an agricultural extension centre at Thirukkadaiyur. He also gave away benefits to 40 farmers under the special kuruvai package during the visit.

Collector C. Suresh Kumar, Joint Director of Agriculture Sekar, and others accompanied him during the inspection.
