The “Adipooram” tank at Sri Akilandeswari-Sri Jambukeswarar temple in Tiruvanaikovil is getting given a facelift as part of tourism development programme.
The Tourism Department had sanctioned Rs. 69.90 lakh for four works. It included Rs. 11.60 lakh for beautification of Adipooram tank, work on which has been in full swing. The sprawling tank remained neglected for a prolonged period and lack of adequate lighting facility had made it a haven for anti-social elements, particularly at night. The temple authorities had set up fences preventing entry of anti-social elements in the area. However, as a special measure, electrification of the “Adipooram” tank would be taken up to beautify the tank area, according to temple sources.
Adipooram is a major festival at the temple when the tank was filled with water drawn from the borewell of the temple.
Three other components, executed at an estimate of Rs. 58.30 lakh, pertained to provision of amenities to the devotees at the Sri Nilagiriswarar Thoppu area near the temple.
A rest room at an estimate of Rs. 21.50 lakh; bathroom block at Rs.11.10 lakh, and tourism reception unit at Rs. 25.70 lakh had been built here.
