The police department has ensured transparency in road accident cases by uploading details of accident cases involving motor vehicles online in the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) currently in vogue for other cases.

The accident victims were finding it difficult to get documents for pursuing their cases. To avoid delay in arriving at a settlement, the police have introduced the system. So far, the CCTNS was utilised for uploading details of all cases except road accident cases. The decision to include road accident cases was taken following a directive by the Madras High Court, said T. Senthilkumar, Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi.

Addressing the media here on Wednesday, Mr. Senthilkumar said that the first road accdient case was uploaded at Tiruverumbur police station on Wednesday. An accident victim needed about 13 types of documents that ranged from the First Information Report, vehicle registration certificate, accident register copy, driving license, wound certificate, motor vehicle inspector's report, post mortem report, final report etc.

It would be mandatory for all the police stations to upload these records before framing the charge sheet. “Without these records, no charge sheet can be presented in the court,” he said explaining the advantages of the system.

Insurance companies could download any document on online payment of ₹ 100 a document. It would be ₹10 a document for the litigant public.

Superintendent of Police said that the genuineness of registration certificate, driving license and insurance policy would be verified before uploading the documents. He said the details can be accessed through user credentials, using the user name and password allotted for each case. The accident cases were registered on a trial basis so far and based on its success, the programme was inaugurated on Wednesday.

Old accident cases would also be uploaded. As many as 300 cases including 80 fatal cases registered at various stations in the district would be uploaded.

The system, he said, would relieve the litigant public to go over to the police station and eliminate their workload. Further, the documents could be downloaded anywhere across the state.
