In a significant seizure in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections in Karur district, election officials intercepted a truck carrying a consignment of 625 grinders earmarked for Tamil Nadu government’s free supply scheme at Marudur near here on the Tiruchi-Karur Highway on Monday.

A flying squad led by block development officer Rathinam were conducting a vehicle check near Marudur when they found a truck transporting the consignment from Mantra Industries, Coimbatore.

The destination of the consignment was meant to be the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation warehouse at Thiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district. The travel papers mentioned the date of delivery as February 19 queering the pitch further.

Taken aback, the officials tried to contact the dispatcher who failed to respond despite repeated attempts by the officials and the crew. Kulithalai RDO Chitrairaj and Tahsildar Sadasivam decided to seize the vehicle and took it to the taluk office where further inquiry was being conducted.

The two-member crew has been detained. Meanwhile, the officials here contacted their counterparts in Thiruvaiyaru to ascertain whether they were expecting any consignment on Monday but they firmly replied in the negative, it was learnt.
