Coins and currencies of various countries belonging to different periods of time are on display at the All-India level eleventh Coins Expo 2010, an exhibition, organised by the Chola Mandala Numismatics Society at Sangeetha Mahal in Thanjavur.
The exhibition was inaugurated by M.S.Shanmugham, District Collector. M.Durairasu, Founder and President of the society aid the society has been organising such exhibitions every year with the aim of creating awareness among students and people about our ancient culture, history, archaeology, science and technology which is reflected in such coins and currencies.
“Thanjavur Big Temple has completed 1000 years of its construction and the temple's millennium is celebrated this year by the Government. The image of the temple was found in a one thousand rupees note released by our Union Government in 1954 . The Brigadeeswara temple was built by King Raja Raja-I (985-1012 A.D.). UNESCO has declared the temple as a world heritage monument”, Mr. Durairasu said.
The currency note is on display in the exhibition. The exhibition showcases copper, silver coins that were used in South India; coins used by Chera, Chola, Pandiya kings; coins of Sathavahana and Pallava periods; coins of later Chola, Chera and Pandiyas; coins of Vijayanagara empire; coins released by Arcot Nawab, Hyder Ali, Tippu Sultan, Mysore Wodayar and Hyderabad Nizam; coins of Travancore, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Pudukottai samasthanams. Also on display are Moghul period coins, coins released by East India Company, Portuguese, French and the Danish in India; special coins released in Independent India; currencies usedin the times of Hitler and Russian Tsars .
Philatelys is another interesting feature in the exhibition, Stamps released on various occassions, war medals, cheques, rare paintings etc are also on display. K.Ayyaru Vandayar, former minister released a souvenir on the occassion. M.Rajendran, Senior divisional accounts officer, PWD received the first copy. H.A.Nazeer, Secretary of the society, V.Swaminathan, assistant secretary of the society participated in the function. The exhibition will last till Sunday, August 8.
