The Tiruchi Railway Division has set up an under vehicle scanner at the main entrance of Tiruchi Junction.
The scanner, set up in front of the computerised passenger reservation system (PRS) centre, was put to use on a trial basis on Thursday.
This was the second under vehicle scanner to be set up in Tiruchi Junction. The first came up at the Kallukuzhi entrance of the junction a few months ago.
After the success of the trial run, both the under vehicle scanners would be handed over the Railway Protection Force, top official sources of the Tiruchi Railway Division said.
Tiruchi was one of the major railway stations in the country to be brought under the scope of the technology–aided Integrated Security Scheme (ISS) which was conceived in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008.
A couple of pre-fabricated under vehicle scanner cabins have come up to monitor the bottom of the vehicles entering the station from the images captured and transmitted by vehicle scanners.
The monitor inside the cabins would be connected to the vehicle scanners and the images transmitted would enable the RPF personnel manning them to view the underside of vehicles and detect any hazardous objects or substances hidden below, say RPF officials. The scanners would be placed outside the cabins.
Two modern public address systems have been commissioned outside the junction on the main premises for the benefit of the commuters arriving by city buses and autorickshaws.
