Members of Thaneer, a voluntary organisation working for the cause of environment protection, staged a demonstration in the city to register their protest against indiscriminate sand mining and to press the government to regulate the mining from river beds across the State.

Expressing concern over the impact of the extensive sand mining from various river beds in the State, the organisation demanded that the government ensure strict adherence to the directives of the courts with respect to the extent and manner of sand mining. Use of heavy machines for sand mining should be stopped completely, they demanded.

People should be sensitised to use of alternatives to river sand for construction, it said. Film director Thangar Bachan inaugurated the protest which was presided over by M.Sekaran, president, Thaneer. K.Neelamegam, secretary, and other office bearers of the organisation participated in the demonnstration held near the Anna Statue in Chinthamani.
