A group of AIADMK cadre began the birth centenary celebrations of party founder and former Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran on Monday by announcing free rides for passengers on a private town bus on the Central Bus Stand-Srirangam route for two days.

Commuters can travel free on the bus on Tuesday also, said M. D. Rajaraja Cholan, who along with a few other party cadre had organised the free ride.

Sweets would be distributed to commuters and songs from MGR films would also be played on the bus.

The bus normally operates 18 trips a day, Mr. Rajaraja Cholan said.

Vellamandi N. Natarajan, Tourism Minister, and S. Valarmathi, Minister for Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, inaugurated the service at the Central Bus Stand on Monday.
