An estimated population of 2.45 lakh children in the age group of 0-5 were targeted for coverage under the campaign.
Oral polio vaccine was administered to children below the age five across Tiruchi district on Sunday under phase I of the Pulse Polio immunisation this year.
An estimated population of 2.45 lakh children in the age group of 0-5 were targeted for coverage under the campaign. District health officials said the campaign had evoked good response right from morning and more than 80 per cent of the targeted population were covered by afternoon.
“By the end of the day, we have covered 97.5 per cent of the target population of children,” said K.C.Cheran, Deputy Director of Public Health, told The Hindu.
The vaccine was administered through 1,520 centres in the district, including 215 in Tiruchi Corporation limits. Over 6,000 government employees and volunteers were deployed to carry out the campaign. Sixty-six mobile teams administered the drops at places of public congregation including railway stations, bus stands and places of worship.
This apart, arrangements were made to administer the vaccine to children travelling by trains.
Earlier in the day, N.R.Sivapathi, Minister for School Education, Law, Youth Welfare and Sports, inaugurated the campaign at Srirangam.
