The number of farmers enrolled under the Farmers Protection Scheme has touched 9.75 lakhs in Tiruchi district with the enrolment of about 2.50 lakh new members, said T.P.Poonachi, Minister for Khadi and Village Industries, on Saturday.

Last year, there were about 7.25 lakh members under the scheme and they were distributed welfare assistance worth Rs.4.40 crore. Based on the instructions from Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to ensure that no farmer was left out of the scheme, 2.50 lakh new members have been enrolled. So far, 17,819 beneficiaries have been distributed welfare assistance to the tune of Rs.8.56 crore this year, he said speaking at a function to mark disbursement of welfare assistance under the scheme at Musiri.

The Minister distributed assistance under various heads, to the tune of Rs.71.79 lakhs under the scheme to 1,015 beneficiaries on the occasion. This included educational assistance to 406 beneficiaries, marriage assistance to 230, natural death compensation to 215 and old age pension to 109 members.

R.Manoharan, government chief whip, said the State government was implementing welfare schemes for the benefit of the farmers to take care of their needs right from the cradle to the grave.

N.R.Sivapathy and T. Indira Gandhi, Jayashree Muralidharan, Collector, and other officials were present.
