A photo exhibition, sapling planting drive, distribution of saplings to children, and handing over one gram gold coins to babies marked the 66 birthday celebration of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in Tiruchi on Monday.
Jayashree Muralidharan, Collector, inaugurated the photo exhibition at Chatram bus stand and handed over the saplings to schoolchildren. One gram gold coins were distributed to the 13 new-born infants at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) by AIADMK workers. Collector Jayashree Muralidharan launched the proposal to plant a total of 6,600 saplings from February 24 to 28. In the past two years (2011-12 and 2012-13) a total of 10,20,000 saplings have been planted in the district under the Massive Tree Planting Scheme. This year, the target is 2,06,250 saplings. Magilam, eeti, vengai, vembu, iluppai, punnai, pungal, kadambam, malaivembu, kumizhi, aalam, padham and puvarasu are the major tree varieties to be planted. A.Jaya, Mayor, said that a total of 6,600 saplings would be planted at 66 locations throughout the district as part of the Massive Tree Planting Scheme. A total of 1,500 saplings have already been planted on a 5-acre land owned by the City Corporation in the Panjapur area under the Tamil Nadu Afforestation Project.
