The indefinite strike called by the Federation of Transport Unions commenced in Tiruchi region even as State transport corporation authorities said that majority of the buses were plying.
More than 60% of the government buses were off the roads in Tiruchi region encompassing Tiruchi, Perambalur and Ariyalur districts, said a senior union office bearer of the transport corporation.
A senior TNSTC official told The Hindu that 80% of the buses were on the line adding that steps were being taken to operate buses on Monday onwards using the help of the union affiliated to the ruling party.
However, N. Mani, deputy general secretary of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Workers Federation affiliated to the AITUC said the strike had commenced on Sunday with over 60 % of the buses off the roads in Tiruchi region.
As a precautionary measure teams of police personnel have been deployed at the main depots of TNSTC and SETC in the city to avert any untoward incidents, sources said.
