55 p.c. candidates fail to turn up for railway exam

Only about 45 per cent of the candidates turned up for the written examination conducted by the Railway Recruitment Cell for the about 5,000 Group-D vacancies in Southern Railway Zone here on Sunday. Several candidates from Bihar, Jharkhand and Rajasthan wrote the examination held at 40 centres in the city. Call letters were dispatched to 34,000 candidates and 15,498 appeared for the test that lasted for one-and-half hours. Special buses were operated in the city for the exam. The posts for which the examination was held include, gatekeeper, sweeper-cum-porter, mechanical and electrical assistant. Examination was also conducted in Chennai on Sunday.
