50,000 huts to be converted into concrete houses

About 50,000 huts have been identified for conversion into concrete dwellings under the Kalaignar Housing Scheme in the district so far, according to Collector T. Soundiah.

Speaking at a mass contact programme at Sengathirsolai village in Malliyampathu panchayat on Thursday, Mr.Soundiah said about 70,000 huts have been covered under the enumeration exercise currently underway in the district.

Under the Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme for Life Saving Treatments, 6873 persons have undergone free treatment/ surgeries at a cost of Rs.15.83 crore. About 5.31 lakh families have been photographed for issue of smart cards under the scheme.

During the past one year, about 10,000 students have been extended educational loans to the tune of Rs.78 crore, he said and appealed to the people to avail themselves of the various welfare schemes being implemented by the government.

He also urged to enrol themselves as members of the various welfare boards set up by the government.

Andhanallur Union Chairman S. Durairaj, Malliyampathu Panchayat president P. Kadirvel and other officials participated.
