With Pongal festival just around the corner, Periya Suriyur village near here is gearing up to host the traditional jallikattu .
The bull taming event would be held on January 15 at the village where preparatory works are in full swing. The villagers have constituted a committee for the successful conduct of the event .
With just a week left, registration of bulls was conducted at the village on Tuesday.
As many as 400 bulls would take part in the event this year, said Arumugam, a committee member. Tokens were issued to the owners of the bulls during the day-long registration exercise , he said.
Bulls from Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Salem, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, and Sivaganga districts are expected to participate.
The event to be conducted under the direct supervision of district administration officials would start at 10 a.m. and go on up to 3.30 p.m.
Permission for tamersHaving obtained court order for conducting the event, the committee had sought permission from the district administration for the participation of around 300 bull tamers.
Revenue officials on Tuesday inspected the arrangements made for the event.
Another jallikattu would be held on January 16 at Palakurichi.
