The Education Department and the district administration have picked up the cream of government schools from the across the district to provide them special residential coaching to improve the district’s tally of State-level ranks in the plus two examinations.

Thirty-eight students from the 77 government higher secondary and 13 Adi Dravida welfare schools have been selected to undergo the special coaching to be held at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School at Manachanallur in the district. The group comprised 31 girls and seven boys.

Despite its reputation of being a major educational hub, the district has not been able to produce top rank holders in the Plus Two public exams in recent years. The move is expected to help motivate and equip the students to secure State ranks, official sources said.

District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan, who inaugurated the special coaching on Monday, said bright students who had performed well in the quarterly exams have been selected to undergo the coaching.

The coaching was intended to help promote a focussed approach among the students, who may face diversions and concentration lapses at home because of a variety of reasons.

Expert teachers from various schools would conduct the classes. The classes would be held from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. Special exams would also be organised regularly.

According to Chief Educational Officer N. Anandhi, students who have secured above 1,000 marks in the quarterly exams have been selected for the coaching. Boarding and lodging will be provided free to the students.

To a question, she said parents of the students had happily agreed to send their wards to the coaching.

The district administration in association with the Education Department had previously brought out special guides in various subjects for being distributed among SSLC students of government schools in the district in an attempt to improve the pass percentage.
