Officials of the Labour Department conducted surprise checks at vegetable shops in Gandhi Market here on Wednesday following complaints of underweight of commodities sold by traders.

The checks, which commenced in the early hours, was carried out in all vegetable shops during which the officials checked the electronic weighing balances and conventional weighing balances.

The officials checked whether the weighing balances were stamped after annual verification. During checks, the officials seized 37 weighing balances, including 30 electronic balances, which were not renewed, an official release here said.
