At a time when the State is facing acute power crisis, every individual should strive to conserve energy that will in turn help in preserving our natural resources and protecting the environment, P.Annadurai, Chief Engineer – Distribution – Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited, Tiruchi region, said on Thursday.
Engineers of the Tangedco have been advised to visit educational institutions in the district periodically to drive home the importance of electricity conservation to the student community; Mr.Annadurai said speaking at the valediction of the electricity conservation week observed by the Tangedco here.
Stating that Tamil Nadu’s power requirement was about 12,000 mega watt, he said 7,500 to 8,000 mega watt power was being generated in the State with the deficit ranging from 3,000 to 4,000 mega watt. In order to manage the power crisis situation, load shedding was being enforced across the State.
A host of electricity generation projects were under different stages of implementation in the State, he said adding that the power situation would get stabilised next year. He said 3,230 mega watt power would be added to the Tamil Nadu grid by December 2013.
Earlier, Mr.Annadurai flagged off a rally involving school and college students organised as part of the event to create awareness on electricity conservation. CFL lamps were distributed free of cost to students who took part in the rally.
Certificates were distributed to students who emerged winners in essay, elocution, painting, and poetry competitions organised as part of the electricity conservation week. P.Muthamilselvan, Superintending Engineer (Metro), Tangedco, Tiruchi, and senior officials of the organisation from various districts falling under the Tiruchi region participated.
