Traders led by Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu led by its State Secretary V. Govindarajulu were arrested by the city police on Wednesday when they attempted to enter Tiruchi Railway Junction for a rail blockade agitation in protest against Foreign Direct Investment in multi-brand retail. They were released later in the day. Mr.Govindarajulu claimed that more than 300 members of the ‘peramaippu’ courted arrest, while the police maintained that only half that number was arrested.

The associations rail blockade attempt was preceded by a demonstration on Tuesday. Wearing black clothes, the demonstrating traders raised slogans demanding ban on entry of multinational companies in multi-brand retail.

They distributed black flags to the members of fraternal associations in the district.
