Thirty more marine police stations have been proposed in the State for augmenting coastal security, in the second phase of the programme, Director General of Police Letika Saran said here on Wednesday.
Detailed proposals for setting up the stations along with the locations identified for their establishment have been forwarded to the Union government for sanction, Ms. Saran told reporters shortly after distributing prizes to the winning teams on conclusion of the three-day State Police Games Meet at Anna sports stadium here.
The State has 12 marine police stations, she said.
The newly constituted Organised Crime Intelligence Unit (OCIU) had commenced its core work of collecting intelligence, the DGP said. Vital intelligence provided by the specialised unit had helped investigators crack a major robbery case in Chennai recently.
Headed by Superintendent of Police Thirunavukkarasu, the specialised intelligence unit is functioning from the State headquarters.
The DGP said Quick Reaction Teams had been constituted in 14 centres initially, including Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram, Vellore and Villupuram, for counter-terrorism operations.
The National Security Guards had helped the Quick Reaction Teams during commando and counter- terrorism training programmes organised for them.
Replying to a query, the DGP said five per cent quota had been exclusively set aside for sportspersons in recruitment of police personnel. Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, Karan Singha, Chennai Suburban Commissioner of Police S.R. Jangid and senior police officers were present on the occasion.
