“3 blocks hit by severe drought”

Stating that Manapparai, Marungapuri and Vyampatti blocks have been severely drought-hit in the district, Collector K. S. Palanisamy said that additional borewells would be sunk at various points to tide over the crisis.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, he said that the impact of failure of the north-east and south-west monsoons was being felt in various parts of the district.

“Meeting the water requirement of people living in areas along the Cauvery river bed was not difficult, but there were issues in supplying water to people living in Manapparai, Marungapuri and Vyampatti, as they were badly hit by drought. Even the groundwater table had gone down below 600 feet at several locations,” he said.

Mr. Palanisamy said the District Rural Development Agency and the local bodies had been asked to take effective steps to supply water for drinking and other day-to-day usage.

Borewells would be sunk wherever needed, the Collector said.
