The 29th batch of safety stewards was installed at Seamless Steel Plant (SSTP) of Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) at a function held here on Monday.

B.Alagesan, Joint Director of Industrial Safety and Health, installed them. Mr.Alagesan said that safety stewards should act as bridge between management and line staff in resolving safety issues.

Delivering the presidential address, G.Jayaprakash, general manager, SSTP, said Safety Stewards Scheme will help the company to achieve “nil accident” rate in the long run.

The members will serve the capacity for one year. Since the SSTP is a continuous process plant and comes under ‘Major Accident Hazard’ (MAH) category, safety stewards have an important role in taking awareness on safety to grassroots employees.

T.Baskaran, Additional General Manager, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), said that Safety Stewards Scheme was started in BHEL in 1973 to involve supervisors and equivalent grade employees in plant-level safety promotional activities.
